Which metal is right for you

Here you will find information on each kind of metal that we offer here at Purple Pelican Designs. I’ll explain the pros and cons and how you’ll need to care for them so that you can choose the perfect material for you.

Aluminum

I use 12 gauge pure food grade aluminum

  • Pros - Aluminum 1100 has been proven to be even gentler on the skin than sterling silver. It will never tarnish or turn your skin green. It is lightweight and malleable so you can easily squeeze and bend it to fit your own wrist perfectly. Aluminum is bright and shiny and the most affordable choice we offer. Requires little polishing.
  • Cons – Because aluminum never tarnishes it is also difficult to pigment. The only way to get the dark color in the lettering is with a Sharpie marker which will wear off over time. You can darken it again by filling it in with sharpie and wiping off the excess. The narrowest (1/4”) bracelets can be easy to bend out of shape even with normal wear.
  • Care – Can be wiped with any soft cloth as necessary to remove fingerprints and smudges. Blackening will have to be re done periodically.

Copper

I use only high quality 18 gauge copper.

  • Pros – A little heavier for those who like a weightier metal. Copper is said to have medicinal qualities as well. Many people say that it helps with chronic pain. Blackening will not fade over time. Stronger metal will not bend out of shape easily but can still be squeezed to fit perfectly.
  • Cons – Will oxidize over time and can turn your skin green. Requires frequent polishing.
  • Care –I always enclose a polishing cloth to keep your copper piece shiny. The best way that I have found to clean copper is with ketchup.  Just smear it on, let it sit, and wipe it off.  You can also use any copper cleaner to remove oxidation. Keep in mind that if you have purchased an item in oxidized copper, cleaning it may ruin the original finish. I recommend using the polishing cloths for oxidized copper finishes.

Brass

I use high quality 18 gauge red brass.

  • Pros – Beautiful rich gold color. Heavier metal for a weightier piece. Won’t bend out of shape easily but can be squeezed to fit perfectly. Blackening will not fade over time.
  • Cons – Will oxidize over time and can turn your skin green. Requires frequent polishing.
  • Care – I always enclose a polishing cloth to keep your piece shiny. The best way that I have found to clean copper is with ketchup.  Just smear it on, let it sit, and wipe it off.  You can also use any brass cleaner to remove oxidation.

Sterling Silver

I use high quality 18 gauge .925 sterling silver

  • Pros – Timeless and beautiful Sterling Silver is the best choice for items that you want to last forever. It has a nice weight to it so it feels nice and sturdy. The blackening will never fade. It won’t bend out of shape easily but it can still be squeezed to fit perfectly. Requires little care to keep it looking shiny and beautiful.
  • Cons - It is pricier than aluminum. It can oxidize but does so slowly and it can be polished easily. Requires little polishing.
  • Care – I always enclose a polishing cloth and you can use Jewelry cleaner as well.

  • Our most beautiful option by far.  Gold needs no maintenance beyond occasional wiping with a soft cloth to remove fingerprints.
